When you think of the month of March, what comes to mind?   The color of green and all the fun festivities set for the St. Patrick’s Day holiday? The nearing and long-awaited Spring season as well as Spring break?  Or, if you are a Reader – big or small, parent or non-parent, you may get excited about March 2 each year!  Yes, it’s true! Many individuals across the world celebrate Theodor Seuss Gisel aka Dr. Seuss’s birthday!

March 2 is also known as Read Across America Day where hundreds of school districts, educators, parents, and family members stop what they are doing to honor Dr. Seuss by taking time out to read this day.  The allotted time scheduled for reading may be planned for 30 minutes, an hour, the entire day, or even the entire week.  Some schools host virtual book fairs or read-a-thons for their classroom students.  Educators might even celebrate by encouraging their students to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character and read aloud their favorite Dr. Seuss book to their classmates.

Here are some interesting facts about Dr. Seuss:

  • Favorite Pet:  His dog, Cluny, an Irish Setter
  • Favorite Childhood Hangout:  Forest Park Zoo in Springfield, MA
  • Favorite Activities:  Writing, Reading, and Drawing
  • Green Eggs and Ham was written as a dare by a friend
  • Number of languages his books have been translated:  20
  • First Published Book:  And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street
  • Last Published Book:  Oh, The Places You’ll Go

So, mark your calendars this March 2 and maybe even start planning for next March.  Whichever way you celebrate March 2, remember to have fun and encourage reading!  It is never too late to join this birthday celebration!
